MAGNETIC SYSTEMS FOR LINEAR ACCELERATOR BEAM INJECTION

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4748788

Multiple-beam operation in a linear electron accelerator is simplified if the electrons can be injected into the machine at some angle with respect to the accelerator axis. Characteristics of beams and magnet systems are given in matrix form, and several possible injection systems are analyzed. The best nonisochronous deflection system for injection seems to limit the injector angle to 45 deg to avoid a large debunching. The simplest system uses two bending and one quadrupole magnet. Injection at 90 deg implies the use of an isochronous system, the most attractive one being an off-center quadrupole system that requires design of a special quadrupole magnet. A system with three n-type magnets and two quadrupoles is also feasible and uses all the components in a classical way. (auth)
