Title: ENVIRONMENTAL PATHWAYS OF RADIOACTIVE IODINE FROM NUCLEAR TESTS IN ARID REGIONS

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4748699

Radioiodine produced in the fission process is released to the environment in weapons tests, in reactor accidents, and in the processing of fuel elements. It is distributed as a gas or incorporated in small particles. In either case it is deposited on the surface of the desert vegetation. It is then available for ingestion by desert animals. Some may be deposited on the soil surface. Investigation of these sources of radioiodine irgested by Kangaroo rats indicates that the contaminated food supply accounts for most of the material taken in by the animals, but that contaminated soil also provides important quantities. The soil is both accidentally ingested and taken in by licking the fur. (auth)
