DISTRIBUTION OF P*SUP 32/, Ca*SUP 45/, AND Zn*SUP 65/ IN THE FRUITING BEAN (PHASEOLUS VULGARIS L.) AFTER ROOT ABSORPTION. REDISTRIBUTION OF THESE ELEMENTS DURING GERMINATION OF THE SEED AND THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE YOUNG PLANT (in French)

The distribution of root-absorbed P/sup 32/, Ca/sup 45/ and Zn/sup 65/ in the fruiting bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) plant, the mature seed, and the redistribution of the elements during germination and seedling development was followed. The highest concentration of P/sup 32/ and Zn/sup 65/ was recovered in the actively growing plant parts and reprcductive structures, whereas, Ca/sup 46/ was found in higher concentrations in the older tissues. A major percentage of the seed-contained P/sup 32/ and Zn/sup 65/ (97 and 84%, respectively) was found in the cotyledons and 74% of the Ca/sup 45/ was found in the seed coat. On a dry weight basis the greatest concentration of P/sup 32/ and Zn/sup 65/ was recovered in the epicotyl + hypocotyl + radicle. The greatest concentration of Ca/sup 46/ was still found in the seed coat. All three nutrients (P/sup 32/, Ca/sup 46/ and Zn/sup 65/) were translocated out of the cotyledons and into the remaining portions of the embryo at varying rates. After a six-day germination period 29, 14, and 54% of the cotyledon-contained P/sup 32/, Ca/sup 46/, and Zn/sup 65/, respectively, was translocated out of the cotyledons. Of the P/sup 32/, Ca/sup 46/ and Zn/sup 65/ transported out of the cotyledons, greater percentages were recovered in the hypocotyl + radicle (basipetal transport) than in the epicotyl (acropetal transport). The following order of mobility, Zn/sup 65/, P/sup 32/, and Ca/sup 46/, was established using as a criterion the percent of the nutrient present in the cotyledon at beginning of germination transported to other parts of the embryo.
