The procedure-oriented algorithmic language, Algol 60, developed without regard to any computer, is described. The ability of Algol 60 to describe recursive processes is discussed. The generality of the language, the metalinguistic formulas used to define its syntax, translator development, and the use of Algol for communicating among people are also discussed. (M.C.G.)
