ESTIMATION OF TRITIUM BY GAS-PHASE COUNTING TECHNIQUE

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4748209
The construction, operation, and standardization details of a gas-phase counting system employed for the estimation of T in aqueous samples are described. Two different methods were employed for the extraction of a suitable gas for internal counting in a G-M counter. The counter characteristics and calibration details are established independently with hydrogen and acetylene. The former is produced by reducing the test sample with Ca, while the latter is prepared by treating the test sample with CaC/sub 2/, both reactions taking place at room temperature. The counter uses Burshane as the quenching gas in the hydrogen method. Quenching gas is not necessary in the case of acetylene filling. The lower limits of tritium concentration satisfactorily assayed are 2 x 10/sup -4/ mu C/cc and 2 x 1O/sup -3/ mu C/cc in acetylene and hydrogen methods, respectively. The build-up of T concentration in CIR moderator and the method of computation of atmospheric T levels are discussed. (auth)
