BERYLLIUM WINDOW FOR GAMMA RAYS IN A LIQUID-HELIUM CRYOSTAT

Two commercial x-ray windows (0.040-in. thick beryllium disk brazed into a Monel frame) were soft-soldered into ports in a stainless steel cryostat. Gamma rays are passed through the windows to a Mossbauer absorber submerged in liquid helium. No leaks were detected after 18 cycles to 4.2 deg K, and the transmission of 14-kev protons is >98%, as compared to only approximates 50% for 0.010-in. aluminum. (D.L.C.)
