THE EFFECTS OF RADIATION ON HIGH POLYMERS. POLYETHYLENE, POLYPROPYLENE AND POLYOXYMETHYLENE

Journal Article · · Toshiba Rev. (Japan)
OSTI ID:4746978
Polyethylene, polypropylene, and polyoxymethylene were irradiated with either Co/sup 60/ gamma rays or BETA rays from an accelerator in air and in vacuum. The irradiation effects were examined by measuring the flow characteristics, and analyzing their nuclear magnetic resonance absorption, infrared absorption, and carbon-hydrogen contents. The flow curves of polymers showed the degree of cross-linking and scission with fair accuracy. The nuclear magnetic resonance absorption, infrared absorption, and the H and C content were in good agreement with the flow curves in determining the effect of irradiation. A comparison of effects of the irradiation between the polymers showed differences in general characteristics among them clearly. (OID)
