DIRECT-READING CHEMICAL RADIATION DOSIMETER COMPOSED OF SOLIDS
A chemical radiation dosimeter for measuring various kinds of ionizing radiations (x rays, gamma rays, protons, electrons, alpha particles) is described. It is composed of a transparent solid polymer, such as vinyl plastics or polyester resins, which is soluble in an organic solvent. Either a halogenated hydrocarbon such as bromoform, tetrachlorethane, iodoform, etc., or an inorganic compound such as IBr, ICl, Pbl, HgCl/sub 2/, HgBr or Hgl is added to the polymer. Finally, the leuco compound of a dye is dissolved in the solid solution to serve both as sensitizer and indicator, changing to the colored form when the halogen compound is irradiated, in a manner which can be reproduced and easily estimated. The extinction at the absorption maximum is either a linear or an exponential function of the dosage depending on the relative concentrations of the halogen compounds and the dye. For extending the measuring range, it is suggested to add a base like ammonia, diethylenetetriamine, or triethylenetetramine. The geometrical form of the dosimeter can be most freely chosen as it can be easily machined. (Gmelin Institute)
