A radioactivity detector was developed, in which a semiconductor oscillator is inhibited from oscillating until the semiconductor is exposed to gamma radiation. The detector consists of a transistor oscillator with adjustable resistors in the transistor electrode circuits, an acceptor metal such as Cu in contact with the semiconductor, and a source of weak light irradiation for the semiconductor. The circuit is adjusted so that oscillation is inhibited. Exposure to radioactivity decreases the inhibition, causing the circuit to oscillate. This device is applicable to well logging. (M.P.G.)
