It is found that in a tungsten-filament diode filled with argon at about 50 mm Hg, the initial breakdown follows the relation (V--V⁰)(T--T⁰) = C (V is the anode voltage, T is the cathode temperature in deg K, and V⁰, T⁰, and C are constants), and that at higher voltages and currents a second breakdown'' occurs. This second transition is identified as the transition from glow to arc discharge. (T.F.H.)
