URANIUM-MOLYBDENUM ALLOY FUEL COSTS

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4746561

Fuel costs of an HNPF reactor using U-- Mo alloy fuels and a 19 rod UO/ sub 2/ cluster fuel element with 0.5-in. dia fuel slugs are presented. The two alloys considered were U--3 wt% Mo and U--10 wt% Mo. Fuel costs for the U--Mo alloys are higher than the UO/sub 2/ fuel costs, due primarily to the lower permissible peak burnups (5000 Mwd/t-alloy for 3 wt% Mo and 10,000 Mwd/t-alloy for 10 wt% Mo vs 20,000 Mwd/t-- UO/sub 2/ for UO/sub 2/). Tables showing comparison fuel costs, fuel element life, and average burnups for U- Mo alloys are included. (H.G.G.)
