GENERAL AND STRESS CORROSION OF HIGH NICKEL ALLOYS IN SIMULATED SUPERHEAT REACTOR ENVIRONMENT

The results of a program to evaluate the corrosionresistance properties of high nickel alloys in simulated super-heat facilities are presented. Inconel, Incoloy, and Hastelloy-X have excellent corrosion resistance in comparison to previously tested type 304 stainless steel. The Incoloy heat transfer sheaths indicated a higher corrosion than Inconel in 1000 hours, but the Incoloy appears to lose only approximates 1/5 of its corrosion product to the system as compared to 1/3 in the case of Inconel. The descaled weight loss data for the three high nickel alloys that were exposed isothermally to 1050 deg F superheated steam for 5200 hours indicate little corrosion occurring after the first 1000-hours exposure.
