EXCITATION PROCESSES IN HELIUM AND POLARIZATION OF THE RESULTING LIGHT INDUCED BY PROTON IMPACT (5-35 kev)

Journal Article · · Physica

Absolute excitation cross sections in proton-helium collisions are determined by measuring n /sup 1/S yields 2 /sup 1/P and n /sup 1/D yields 2 / sup 1/P transitions of the He I spectrum and n /sup 2/F yields 3 /sup 2/D transitions of the He II spectrum. The excitation cross sections of the n /sup 1/ D levels show maxima as a function of the energy. It is found that the emitted light is polarized in the n /sup 1/D yields 2/sup 1/P He I transitions.
