TRANSVERSE SPACE CHARGE EFFECTS IN PARTICLE ACCELERATORS (thesis)

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4743490
An analysis of transverse space charge effects in particle accelerators is made by means of the Boltzmann equation. With suitable assumptions a closed set of Moment equations was obtained which describes the behavior of the beam. It was found that the motion of the center of the beam is independent of the space charge forces and that space charge effects cannot put the beam onto an integral resonance. Conditions were obtained for an approximate stationary solution for which the center and width of the beam remain constant. It is shown that, in the absence of magnetic field errors, the beam width oscillates if the conditions for a stationary solution are not satisfied and that this oscillation is always stable. A linear theory for the effect of field gradient errors on the beam width for small perturbations from the stationary solution indicates that unstable resonances may exist. Some possible ways of extending the analysis are discussed. (auth)
