Phase Studies on Arc-Melted Plutonium-Carbon Alloys Near the Monocarbide Composition

Journal Article · · Journal of the American Ceramic Society
The phase boundaries and structure of plutonium monocarbide were studied in arc-melted alloys containing between 42 and 60 at.% carbon. Metallographic and x-ray diffraction techniques were used to determine the phases present in as- cast and heat-treated alloys. The phase boundaries of cast PuC were found to be about 42.5 at.% carbon on the low-carbon side to between 48.5 and 50 at.% carbon on its high-carbon side. At 1000 and 400 deg C the lowcarbon PuC phase boundary shifted to higher carbon compositions of about 45.5 and 46 at.% carbon, respectively. A comparison of the experimental densities with the theoretical densities showed that PuC was a defect structure with some of its carbon atom lattice sites vacated.
