A BOILING SLURRY REACTOR CONCEPT
The basic features of the David power reactor concept are discussed. This advanced concept is a boiling-slurry reactor, fueled wtth a dispersion of thorium and enriched uranium oxides in heavy water. The primary system is of the simplest possible design, in order to minimize plantinvestment and maintenance costs. The research and development efforts necessary to carry through the project are expected to be moderate, since most components and materials are conventional and operating temperatures not excessively high. At present the evaluation of the economic feasibility of the concept is of prime concern. Some experimental work is in progress in which factors of economic importance to the project are being studied, mainly saturated boiling and radiolytic-gas recombination. The exciting prospects of this concept seem to warrant further study. In-pile experiments on steam separation in boiling slurries should be in the next objective. (auth)
