Ten anaerobic digester sludges from municipal plants showed variable abilities for anaerobic dehalogenation of pentachlorophenol (PCP) and monochlorophenols (MCPs) in batch serum bottle tests. Acclimation for PCP dehalogenation was affected by sludge dilution and initial PCP concentration. During long-term bench-scale digester operation the PCP dehalogenation pathways changed, producing different end products including the loss of phenol production. Complete dechlorination of PCP was achieved in a continuously fed fluidized-bed reactor (FBR) and in serum bottles after combining PCP-to-3-MCP-dechlorinating and 3-MCP-dechlorinating enrichments.
