THE MECHANISM OF THE C$sup 12$(n,$alpha$)Be$sup 9$ REACTION INDUCED BY 14 Mev NEUTRONS

The distributions in energy and angle of alpha particles emitted in the C/sup 12/(n, alpha )Be/sup 9/ reaction, induced by 14-Mev neutrons, were determined. Alpha particles were detected by photographic emulsions processed to give satisfactory discrimination against protons. A total of 1000 alpha tracks were measured, the ratio of the reaction yield to the background being about unity. The angular distributions of alpha particles corresponding to the 0.0 and 2.4 Mev states of Be/sup 9/ show that the reaction proceeds by a direct mechanism. Both distributions were fitted by theoretical direct-interaction curves and spin assignments were made, representing new information in the case of the 2.4 Mev state. The ratio of reduced widths for the transitions to the ground and 2.4 Mev states was calculated and compared to the corresponding coefficients of fractional parentage. All the evidence obtained suggests that the reaction proceeds by a knockout mechanism. (Dissertation Abst., Vol. 23, No. 7)
