POLARIZATION OF PROTONS SCATTERED BY He$sup 3$

ABS>The polarization of protons elastically scattered by He/sup 3/ has been measured at six proton energies between 4 and 13 Mev over the angular range from 59 to 110 deg . Additional measurements have been made at 133 deg from 7 to 13 Mev and at 124 deg for 10.8 Mev. Scattering from He/sup 4/ at a laboratory angle of 45 deg was used to anaiyze the proton polarization. Most of the measurements were made with He/sup 3/ as the first target and He/sup 4/ as the second target. The first and second target pressures were as high as 20 and 6 atm respectively, giving target thicknesses up to 180 kev. The scattered proton intensity was measured simultaneously for scattering to the left and to the right. Counter telescopes, each consisting of a proportional counter and a scintillation counter coupled in coincidence, were used to detect the scattered protons. The main feature of the data is the large polarization occurring near 120 deg for all energies. The maximum polarization measured was + 0.65 plus or minus 0.06 at 10.8 Mev and 124 deg . The maximum polarization measured at 4 Mev was + 0.40 plus or minus 0.03 at 110 deg . Above 8.8 Mev, the polarization in the vicinity of 80 deg is negative and is as large as --0.20 plus or minus 0.03 at 12.8 Mev and 77 deg . The uncertainties given include the uncertainty in the analyzing power as well as the statistical uncertainty. (M.P.G.)
