Studies were carried out on phase relations involving U carbides, UO/sub 2/, and graphite. Two univariant equilibria were found at 1714 to 1953 deg K: UO/ sub 2/ + 4C yields UC/sub 2/ + 2C0 and UO/sub 2/ + 3UC/sub 2/ yields /4UC + 2CO. Equilibrium CO pressures for the two equilibria were found to be log/sub 10/ p = -18,000/T + 8.23 and -16,000/T + 7.26, respectively. The effects of N/sub 2/ on the equilibria were studied and are used to predict certain features of the C-- N--O--U phase diagram. The standard Gibbs free energies of formation for UC and UC/sub 2/ were calculated and compared with these reported by Grieveson.
