Using 2.8 Mev neutrons emitted in the D(d,n)He/sup 3/ reaction at an angle of 49 deg to the deuteron beam direction as a source of polarized neutrons, the polarization produced in the elastic scattering of neutrons from C, Mg, Al, Ni, and Cu was measured at a scattering angle of 90 deg in the laboratory. Polarization measured for C is in agreement with that calculated from phase shift data characterizing compoundnucleus levels excited by the incident neutrons. The measured values of polarization of neutrons scattered by Mg and Al are very different and suggest that the excitation of the compound nucleus may be insufficient to justify an optical model interpretation of the data. The value of polarization obtained for Mg is in keeping with the increasing trend of polarization with scattering angle exhibited by existing data at 3.1 Mev for Mg. The value obtained for Cu is in agreement with those of previous workers at 3.1, 3.3 and 3.4 Mev. The polarizations obtalned for Cu and Ni, being nearly the same, indicate that the effect of spin-spin interactions on the measured polarizations is rather small. (Dissertation Abst., Vol. 23, No. 7)
