Thermal stability of hexaaluminate film coated on SiC substrate for high-temperature catalytic application

Journal Article · · Journal of the American Ceramic Society
A coating of barium hexaaluminate (Ba{sub 0.75}Al{sub 11.0}O{sub 17.25}) on an {alpha}-SiC substrate and the thermal stability of the formed film were investigated for a high-temperature catalytic application. The film prepared by sol coating consist4ed of BaAl{sub 2}Si{sub 2}O{sub 8} and {alpha}-Al{sub 2}O{sub 3} phases and always contained many cracks or exfoliations after heating at 1,200 C. A hexaaluminate porous film was successfully formed by slurry coating without void formation at the interface between the film and the substrate and exfoliation due to the formation of the intermediate layer after heating at 1,200 C. The microstructure of the film remained unchanged, even after heating at 1,300 C.
