PATHFINDER ATOMIC POWER PLANT TECHNICAL PROGRESS REPORT, JULY 1962- SEPTEMBER 1962

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4741068
Progress on fuel element research and development and on reactor mechanical studies is reported. Thermal shocking of the super heater fuel element was begun and two cycles were completed. The apparatus and procedures are described. A two-dimensional transport theory analysis of the experimental low-enriched superheater (LESH) cells was performed. An H-900 F heat-treated and chromeplated pinion shaft was tested during this period with a spare 304 stainless steel rack. The wear of the pinion teeth in the 13,000 full 72-in. cycles was negligible, proving that this type of pinion is satisfactory for the reference design in the Pathfinder control rod drive. (M.C.G.)
