In accordance with US Department of Energy (DOE) mission responsibilities, the future environmental restoration efforts of DOE will encompass the shipment of many types and mixes of hazardous materials and wastes to either disposal or interim storage sites Some of these shipments will include radioactive wastes. The regulatory requirements for shipping any high-level radioactive wastes will require the use of specific packagings to protect the public health and safety. However, large volumes of low-level radioactive contaminated materials qualify for shipment in bulk, provided they are property protected in the shipping vehicle or packaging used for transport.
