The corrosion resistance of a mild steel (type C-1020), two alloy steels (21/4 Cr-1 Mo, and 9 Cr), and three high chromium stainless irons (410, 430, and 446) in a Pb-Bi eutectic melt for 96 hr was studied. An attempt was made to compare the corrosion resistance of one material with that of another, rather than to determine the absolute rates of corrosion of the individual materials. From the standpoint of corrosion product accumulation in the liquid metal it was concluded that the steels containing small amounts of chromium would be more desirable container materials than those containing large amounts of chromium. However, in making a choice of materials it was decided that rapid intergranular attack followed by extensive spalling was a more important consideration than the amount of chromium or iron released to the liquid metal by the lower chromium steels, and on this basis the 21/4 Cr--1 Mo alloy steel represented the best material.
