A method is described for producing a dense sintered body of uranium dioxide or a mixture thereof with plutonium dioxide. Compacted uranium dioxide or a compacted uranium dioxide-plutonium dioxide mixture is heated to at least 1300 deg C in an atmosphere of carbon dioxide or carbon dioxide mixed with carbon monoxide.
