ASYMPTOTIC DIRECTIONS OF PRIMARY COSMIC-RAY PROTONS ARRIVING AT DURHAM AND MT. WASHINGTON, N.H. Scientific Report No. 10

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4740399
The asymptotic directions for parti cles of discrete rigidities detected at Mt. Washington and Durham, New Hampshire, are determined by calculating the trajectories of these parti cles in the geomagnetic field. From these results a lower cutoff rigidity of approximately 1.16 BV and 1.30 BV is assigned to Mt. Washington and Durham, respectively. The penumbra effect is discussed in relationship to the study of solar flare associated cosmic-ray increases. A FORTRAN program for converting geographic coordinates to geomagneti c coordinates using high-speed computers is also included. (auth)
