The report summarizes an on-going exchange of experience between the Russian Ministry of Atomic Energy and the US Department of Energy in the field of radiochemical safety which was initiated two years ago. Severe accidents at nuclear power plants (NPPs) have drawn attention of the public, governmental authorities and specialists to reactor safety problems. However the probability of accidents causing radiological consequences exists not only at the NPPs. So, there has been a series of accidents of various extents at radiochemical processing facilities in both Russia and the USA. The explosion on April 6, 1993, when processing of radioactive wastes in Siberian Chemical Association (SChA) in Tomsk initiated Russian/American workshops on radiochemical safety problems, with the first information exchange being held at the Hanford site in September 1993.
