Source term model for the IRUS near-surface disposal facility

A source term model provides the rate at which radionuclides are released from a disposal facility. This paper describes the source-term model being used for the performance assessment (PA) of AECL`s near-surface LLRW disposal facility. The facility, called IRUS (for the Intrusion Resistant Underground Structure) is a multi-cell concrete vault that is to be located in free-draining overburden at AECL`s Chalk River Laboratories (CRL) site. The IRUS source term model includes features that account for the failure of the vault roof and waste containers, waste form radionuclide sorption, advection and dispersion. The vault model has been implemented in the SYVAC3-NSURE code, an integrated PA code that evaluates the radiological impact of LLRW disposal via the groundwater pathway. NSURE (Near-Surface Repository) is an integrated PA code developed for the safety assessment of near-surface disposal facilities for LLRW. NSURE runs under SYVAC3 (Systems Variability Analysis Code generation 3) executive to take advantage of its time-series package and its features for variability analysis. It is of sufficient generality to be applied for the assessment of other types of near-surface disposal concepts.
