SPIN-WAVE DISPERSION CURVES FOR MAGNETITE

Journal Article · · Phys. Letters

Watanabe and Hrocknouse have previously reported inelastic neutron scattering experiments that make possible the reconstruction of the acoustic spin- wave dispersion curve out to the edge of the Brillouin zone and the long wavelengih portion of one of the optical modes. In this work the long wavelength approximation is avoided, and the dispersion laws are obtained for all six modes in forms that are valid for all momenta in the first Brillouin zone and are appropriate for an inverse spinel. Calculated dispersion curves are shown for an inverse spinel with spins and phase factors for neighboring spins corresponding to ordered magnetite. These curves are found to be in excellert agreement with experiment, and the spin-wave approximation appears to be a good one for values of ka (K = spinwave wave-vector, a = lattice parameter) as large as unity.
