VARIATIONS OF THE MAGNETIC FIELD AND SUNSPOT CONFIGURATIONS DURING SOLAR FLARES--A DETERMINATION OF THE TOTAL ENERGY OF FLARES

Journal Article · · Soviet Astron. AJ (English Transl.)
OSTI ID:4738471
Recordings of the magnetic field in active regions, taken with a magnetograph, and photographs of the sun in integral light, show that the humps'' of the magnetic field and sunspots move during a flare. The onset of such motions coincides to within 5 minutes with the beginning of flare development. The magnitude of the displacement varies from case to case, and often reaches 20,000 km. The motion of the humps'' and sunspots are, as a rule, toward flare nodes. The energy liberated is estimated on the assumption that the displacement of the humps'' and sunspots toward flares is associated with contraction resulting from the conversion of magnetic energy into the thermal energy of the flare. The energy of a flare is found to be of the order of 10/sup 32/ ergs. (auth)
