Since the issuance of the last summary report, an account of work on the dissociation pressure of RuCl/sub 3/(s) was published, and a paper on vaporizntion data on the Ru--Cl/sub 2/ system at 650 to 1500 deg C is being submitted for publication. In the latter work, RuCl/sub 3/ and RuCl/sub 4/ were identified as major gaseous species. In addition, a paper on the phasebehavior, dissociation-pressure, and vaporization data on the Pd --Cl/sub 2/ system is being submitted for publication. Developments which resulted from a study of the Pd-Cl/sub 2/ system include the identification of PdCl/sub 2/ and the gaseous polymer Pd/sub 5/Cl/sub 10/ as the major gaseous species. Pd metai was shown to be appreciably soluble in liquid PdCl/sub 2/. As a result of x ray studies of the Rh--Cl/sub 2/ system, it was shown that the previously reported RhCl/sub 2/ and RhCl do not exist. Preparations are being made for vapor-pressure studies of the Rh--Cl/sub 2/ system at 1000 to 1500 deg C. Work was performed using infrared techniques to determine the molecular structure of RuCl/sub 4/(g); the results suggest a tetrahedral structure. As previously mentioned, because of interesting developments in the Ru, Rh, and Pd systems, studies of the closely related Os, Ir, and Pt systems are contemplated, and work was begun at 500 to 1000 deg C on the Os--Cl/sup 2/ system.
