Castrate male rats, placed in parabiosis with castrate females, were given supralethal doses of whole-body x irradiation. The nonirradiated female partner aided survival from acute radiation sickness and eventual functional recovery of the irradiated male's own bone marrow. Appearance of female drumstick leukocytes, in numbers too great to be attributed to chance, in the peripheral circulation of the irradiated males, suggests transient support by the female. However, female cells were found only rarely and transiently in regenerated bone marrow of the males. At this dose range, marrow regeneration occurs from autogenous, persisting, hematopoietic cells.
