THE ANION-EXCHANGE SEPARATION OF PLUTONIUM AND THORIUM

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4736791
The use of anion exchange from strong nitrate solutions for the purification of Pu has been quite successful, largely because the method is highly specific for Pu. However, the method fails for Pu--Th mixtures since both elements are strongly sorbed. Plutonium (IV) is also strongly sorbed by anion- exchange resin from strong HCl solution, but Th(IV) is not sorbed from any concentration of HCl. This allows these elements to be separated with one sorptiondesorption of the Pu. The optimum conditions in the feed solution are 7 to 8M HCl, 25 plus or minus 10 g Pu/l, amy percentage of Th and 0.1 > M HNO/sub 3/ < 3. The method was successfully tested on a pilot-plant scale using 80 g of Pu per run. The product solutions contained 20 to 40 g Pu/l, approximates 1 M HCl and <10 ppm of Th in the Pu. One run with a plant-scale system, designed to handle 400-g batches of Th contaminated Pu, has successfully produced a <30 ppm product. (auth)
