RADIATION BURNS
The injurious effects of radiation, particularly in skin as a result to radiotherapy, are reviewed. Nine case histories are cited in which severe dermatitis and ulceration resulted from radium or x-ray treatment of generally benign conditions. Plastic surgical repair in these cases is described. Treatment of injury to vital internal organs resulting from external irradiation or damage to the skin, such as erythema, is determined by the area of damage and severity of the pathologic changes. Such effects as acute radiodermatitis, atrophy of the skin, indolent ulcers, and other surface or subcutaneous lesions, however, are progressive and should be recognized early. They require surgical excision and grafting before serious ulceration or malignant changes occur. (H.H.D.)
