MEASUREMENT OF THE $gamma$-DOSE BY MEANS OF FILM BADGES (in Hungarian)

Journal Article · · Energia Atomtech.
OSTI ID:4736122

Monitoring of individuals assigned to work locations where they might be exposed to gamma -radiation is carried out on the basis of the standards set by the ICRP in 1959. Routine measurements are based on the use of ionization chambers or of photographic film. The 2 methods are not competitive; rather, they supplement each other. Techniques based on the darkening of photographic emulsion played a great role in radiation measurement since the discovery of radioactivity more than 85 years ago because the densttometric method may be used conveniently on a large scale. Secondary factors must be taken into consideration in the measurements; they include variations in the fabrication, fogging caused by background radiation or storage at high temperatures. The emulsion records the photons as a function of their energy, resulting in differences between numerical values of the measurements and actual radiation effects in air. Variations of the sensitivity of the emulsion are not parallel with the changes of the attenuation coefficients; a factor of 30 must be used when comparing the 70-kev radiation, which causes maximum darkening, and the gamma -radiation of Co/sup 60/. The tests made were restricted to the 0.3 to 1.5- Mev range using Co/sup 60/ Cs/sup 137/, Hg/sup 203/, and Ra sources and various films compared. It was found that the Hungarian-made emulsions may be used in the following ranges: 50 to 700 mr; 200 to 2000 mr; and 100 to 1500 mr. (TTT)
