TREATMENT AND HANDLING OF RADIOACTIVE WASTES IN THE ANDUJAR URANIUM MILL

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4735609
A description of the Andujar Uranium Mill, the radioactive wastes produced in the manufacturing process, their treatment before disposal to the Guadalquivir River, and the survey made to determine the concentration of radioactive contaminants are given. Waste treatment consists of neutralization with lime to pH-8, disposal of solids in a tailing pond, and decantation of liquid effluent in a pool before final disposal. The decontaminations average 87%, 90%, 94%, and 96% with respect to U, Ra, and gross alpha and beta activities sufficient to produce no practical change in the radioactivity of the river water. Methods of analysis used and an overall Ra balance of the process are included. (auth)
