STUDIES ON THE OXYGEN GRADIENTS IN CORRODING ZIRCONIUM ALLOYS

Journal Article · · Journal of Nuclear Materials (Netherlands)
The oxygen gradient beneath the oxide film on zirconlum alloys corroding at various temperatures has been measured. The technique used consisted of observing, as a fwiction of voltage, the disruption of an anodically deposited interference film. This mottling of the anodic film varied in a complex manner with the oxygen content of zirconium. Experimentally determined gradients were related to a theoretical expression involving the diffusivity, rate of corrosion and time of corrosion. These data enable accurate quantitative predictions of the oxygen gradient. A knowledge of the gradient is especially useful in understanding corrosion at high temperatures where the oxygen penetration occurs to a greater extent than at lower temperatures. (auth)
