A NEW SOLVENT FOR PLUTONIUM EXTRACTION-TRILAURYLAMINE (in French)

The extraction and purification methods for plutonium are essentially based at the moment on the use of tributylphosphate (TBP). A tertiary amine, trilaurylamine (TLA) was used on a laboratory scale with a view to obtaining performances at least comparahle to those of TBP. Its use is recommended in the case of solutions having a high BETA activity. A study of its extractive properties shows that it has a high selectivity in nitric solutions, even diluted, for plutonium and neptunium in their quadrivalent states. The high extraction coefficients for these two species make it possible to obtain high concentrations during the extraction-re-extraction cycle, as well as on a high purification. An original re-extraction method was developed at the CEN-FAR. It is based on the use of an aqueous sulphonitric solution. Tests on solutions from Marcoule, already purified by a TBP cycle, made it possible to verify results obtained in the equilibrium tests. It was thus possible to purify plutonium in a single extraction-re-extraction cycle, thus avoiding three operations: precipitation of the hydroxides, purification with tributylphosphate, and purification on an anion exchange resin. The possibility is also considered of the application of trilaurylamine to neptunium extraction. (auth)
