ABSOLUTE MEASUREMENT OF Wair FOR COBALT-60 GAMMA RAY SECONDAIRES

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4734688
It is noted that the average energy required to produce an ion pair in air, usually denoted by W(air), is basic to many measurements of absorbed dose with ionization chambers. An investigation is described in which a free air ionization chamber is used to measure the ionization per unit volume, while the determination of the energy absorption is based on calorimetric measurement. These measurements revealed that the energy required to produce an ion pair in air for the secondary Co/sup 60/ gamma radiation is 33.86 plus or minus 0.33 ev/ ip. (J.R.D.)
