Fluorescent Lifetime of Terbium in the Presence of Other Rare-Earth Ions

Journal Article · · Journal of the Optical Society of America
Fluorescent lifetime measurements on the 5D4 level of Tb3+ were made by a stroboscopic technique in which the sample was puised 40 times per second through a Corning No. 7-60 filter by a Kemlite stroboscope tube. Detection was by means of a 1P2l photomultiplier pulsed to 1.5 kv for 2.5 mu sec. Data were taken at room temperature with an estimated error of about 2%. It was concluded that a resonance phenomenon was active in the rare-earth system and that it was a satisfactory explanation for the strong quenching ability of Er, Ho, and Nd.
