THE /cap alpha/ /in equilibrium/ /cap beta/ PHASE TRANSITION IN PURE URANIUM
A critical review of previous work on the alpha / deg transition in pure uranium is presented. It is shown that the BETA yields alpha change is diffusional at slow cooling rates and martensitic during fast cooling and that the alpha -- BETA change is always diffusional except in the very special case of the transformation of martensitic alpha which transforms by reversal of the primary shear if the heating rate is sufficiently rapid. The two current theories of remnant textures in alpha uranium are examined in the light of the above conclusions and both found to be unsatisfactory. An alternative explanation is proposed based upon the probable effects of BETA grain size on the BETA in equilibrium alpha transformitions. (auth)
