>It was found that cation radicals of amines are formed on irradiating a film of methyl methacrylate contairing a small amount of amine at liquid nitrogen temperatures. On irradiating a transparent, frozen organic soiution containing 0.005 mol/l of diphenylamine, a blue-green compound was formed with an absorption maximum at 670 m mu . The optical density was proportional to the dose up to 7 x 10/sup 18/ ev/g, and then remained constant with a further increase in dose. The color disappeared rapidly on thawing with emission of a blue fluorescence. A limiting concentration of cation amine radicals was attained that could not be increased by increasing the dose or raising the concertration of amine in the irradiated solution. The limiting concentration of triphenylamine cation radicals was a factor of 100 greater in polymethacrylate than in hydrocarbon solvents. It was assumed that electrons are trapped by the ethoxy group of the methyl methacrylnte molecule, and that the amine can thus react with the substrate. The limiting concentration of cation radicais was attained at a dose of 7.3 x 10/sup 19/ ev/g, and an amine concentration of 0.005 moles/l. The G yield of cation radicals was 0.16. It was found that CCl/sub 4/ also increases the yieid of cation radicals on irradiating diphenylamine. (TTT)
