Examples of the consequences of the hypothesis of causality in classical physics are given. The reduction formula for the scattering matrix elements is derived, and the rigorous derivation of the dispersion relations for pionnucleon scattering in the forward direction is carried out on the basis of the ideas of K. Symanzik and N. N. Bogoljubov. The method consists in deriving the dispersion relations for an auxiliary amplitude that has no singularity in the unphysical energy region; from these relations the analyticity properties of the retarded amplitude are deduced; the dispersion relations for the pion-nucleon scattering amplitude foiiow straightforwardly from these properties. Applications of the dispersion relations are mentioned, and comment is included on the unphysical region present in the case of non-forward scattering. (auth)
