DETECTION OF AN INFINITE ANOMALOUS THRESHOLD IN THE REACTION K$sup -$ + p $Yields$ $Sigma$ + $pi$ + $pi$

Journal Article · · Phys. Rev. Letters
It is shown that infinite anomalous threshold in the reaction K/sup -/ + p yields SIGMA + pi /sup +/ pi should give rise to a pronounced peaking in the differential cross section. This peaking is conjectured to be greatest in the region of large omega (energy of two pions in their own cms system), for a K-p cms energy approximately equal to (M/sub omega /sup 0/ + M/sub LAMBDA /). It is suggested that experiments on this reaction at K/sup -/ lab momenta of 1.18 to 1.21 Bev/c should disclose this peaking, assuming the mass of the omega /sup 0/ meson to lie between 766 and 783 Mev. The utility of the experimental investigation as a check on the efficacy of penturbation theoretical analyses of elementary particle interactions is noted. (T.F.H.)
