EFFECT OF RADIOACTIVE FALLOUT ON WATER SUPPLIES IN CONNECTICUT

Journal Article · · J. New Engl. Water Works Assoc.
OSTI ID:4732498
The surveillance program conducted by the State Health Department on 3 municipal water supplies during the period 1956-1961 with emphasis on the determination of gross beta activity in the water supplies under study and the correlation of the levels found with the thermonuclear testing programs of the U. S. and the U.S.S.R. is discussed. The data indicate a definite correlation in the levels of beta activity but point out that the measurable levels are well below those recommended by the Federal Radiation Council in its Radiation Protection Guides (RPG's). Information is included on the relative effects of various methods of water treatment on the removal of the radioactive materials, with certain suggestions in regard to the establishment of a statewide monitoring program. Consideration is given primarily to the problems of Sr/sup 90/, Sr/sup 89/, I/sup 131/ and Cs/sup (Public Health Eng. Abstr., 43: No. 3, Mar 1963)
