STUDIES ON THE EXTRACTION OF NIOBIUM, TANTALUM, AND URANIUM FROM SAMARSKITE

Journal Article · · Indian Journal of Technology (India) Supersedes J. Sci. Ind. Res., Sect. D
OSTI ID:4731913
The extraction of Nb, Ta, and U from samarskite was studied using different methods, such as alkali fusion followed by hydrochloric acid treatment; alkali fusion and sulfuric acid leaching; direct reaction with concentrated sulfuric acid; and fusion with ammonium fluoride and ammonium bifluoride. Optimum conditions were determined for each treatment. Solvent extraction wfth methyl isobutyl ketone from 9 N sulfuric acid-5 N hydrofluoric acid mixture gave satisfactory separation of Nb and Ta oxides. Niobium and tantalum oxides of st run. Concent 99.9% purity were prepared in kilogram quantities by the method. (auth)
