EXCITATION STATE OF Be$sup 8$ IN Li$sup 7$(p,/cap alpha/)He$sup 4$ REACTION

Energy levels of Be/sup 8/in Li/sup 7/(p, alpha )He/sup 4/ reaction at E/ sub p/ = to 6.55 Mev are analyzed. The curves of excitation levels at 5.25 to 6.55 Mev for 30 deg center-of-mass and at 3.3 to 6.55 Mev for 80 deg showed two resonances in the vicinity of 3.0 and 5.6 Mev. The 3-Mev resonance was previously established by D. R. Inglis (Phys. Rev., 74: 21(1948)), who suggested that the angular distribution of alpha particles in the resonance appeared in the intermedinte 2/sup +/ state at 19.9 Mev, width GAMMA = 1 Mev, and in the 0/ sup +/ state with a width of several Mev above the resonance. The resonance at 5.6 Mev is explained by Be/sup 8/ excitation at 22.3 Mev and GAMMA = 1 Mev width or by other excitations at 22.3 Mev with at least one 2/sup +/ spins state. (R.V.J.)
