Local time dependence of the magnitude of geomagnetic-storm sudden commencements

Journal Article · · Journal of Geophysical Research
Dependence of the magnitude of geomagnetic-storm sudden commencements on local time was studied by examining IGC and IGY data taken by pairs of stations at about the same geomagnetic latitude, but with one station in darkness and the other in sunlight. Local noon is favored for maximum magnitudes for stations near the geomagnetic equator, but a shift to later hours is noted for increases in geomagnetic latitude. For stations near the auroral zone, a shift in the opposite direction occurs.
