Electric dissociation of negative hydrogen ions in cyclotrons and synchrocyclotrons

Journal Article · · Nuclear Instruments and Methods
Energies are estimated, above which negative hydrogen ions can not be accelerated in cyclotrons and synchrocyclotrons, because of their dissociation by the electric field γv x B/c. Their use in sector-focusing constant-frequency cyclotrons of several hundred Mev intended as "meson factories'' would require magnetic fields lower than usual by at least a factor of two or three. However, this effect should not limit their use in the present generation of such machines of 20 to 80 Mev having Bmax < 20 kG. The lower energy gain per turn in synchrocyclotrons leads to dissociation at somewhat lower energies. The limiting energy for any cyciotron can be approximated by the method described. The estimates are based on unpublished experimental results and approximate calculations of other workers. (auth)
